Neighborhood History

Schildmeier Woods is located just south of U.S. 52 and east of Carroll Road in Sugar Creek Township, Hancock County. The development was established in the early 1980s and contains about 250 single-family homes. Driving time to downtown Indianapolis is about 25 minutes. Our children attend Southern Hancock School system.

In the early 1900s Schildmeier Woods with its dense groves, creek, and tall white oak trees was once a summer refuge for a large flock of sand hill cranes who made their nests in the lofty boughs of the tall white oaks. It was an unbreakable rule with the owner and guardian of this woodland refuge, Anton Schildmeier, that the cranes and all the other birds and animals inhabiting his woods, would be secure.

Located close by is the newly developed Sugar Creek Township Park. This park will contain shelter houses; play equipment, and walking trails. Also near Schildmeier Woods are many churches, a library, banks, post office, and a neighborhood market

The Schildmeier Woods Neighborhood Association is comprised of neighbors who care about our subdivision and volunteer their time. Everyone is encouraged to join in both the helping keep our country-like neighborhood neat, tidy, and up to date, and also in our "fun" activities i.e. cookouts, luminaries, and the annual meeting.

The mission of the Schildmeier Woods Homeowners Association is to unite our residents, to protect and enhance the quality and value of our community.
